Your safety and peace of mind are central to our community. At Hillcrest Estates, residents will have access to our storm safe room once completed—a specialized facility designed to offer protection during severe weather events in our area. The storm safe room is scheduled to be completed in spring of 2027.
In development through a dedicated 10-year effort between the Hillcrest team and the City of Altoona to secure necessary planning, funding, and approvals, the safe room is constructed as a hardened structure under strict engineering and FEMA standards. It is specifically engineered to withstand extreme winds of up to 250 mph, providing reliable protection against tornadoes and severe straight-line storms.
Once completed, this facility stands as the only designated storm safe room in the immediate vicinity and throughout the Altoona area. With a total capacity of 900 occupants, it is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring step-free entryways and dedicated space to comfortably accommodate wheelchairs and residents with mobility needs.
In addition to serving as a high-strength shelter during weather emergencies, the safe room serves a dual purpose for our neighborhood. During non-emergency periods and calm weather, the facility operates as a community recreational space, hosting resident activities and local gatherings.
